....PLANET ESS DOT....

ooookaaaaay, whats going on everyone?! Have been meaning to jump on the blog band wagon for a loong time now but like most things in life it got thrown to the side with the less important things to do (a long with the other weird-but-still-need-to-do-before-i-die kind of things) But yeah. So here we are. Im not quite sure yet how often I'll be updating this bad bizatch but Im sure whenever the mood takes me to moan about suttin or to try and be a bit controversial Ill be on here quicker than a fat kid on cake, comprende?

Despite being called Planet Ess Dot its not actually always gunna be about me (yes, i promise!) but more so about my opinions on current things in the fickle, cruel but oh so wonderful world of MUSIC. I don't wanna bore anyone with a biography so will try and squeeze who i be into a sentence or 2...or 3 :/I'm a DJ (tune selection is what Im good at, and ive been raised to believe if your good at suttin - never do it for free!) , a Radio Production student (tryna get my degree on ya diggg?), and a host/presenter (what can I say, anyone that knows me knows I have a big mouth and talking music is what it likes to do the best I cant help it?!). If you wanna know more click hurrrrr - http://www.myspace.com/dj_s_dot

So yeah, my passion is Music Radio and Record Label work and am starting to dabble in event promotion and TV presenting so watch.... this.... space...... Anythin you read here, I would love for you add a comment as the whole point of this blog is to trigger discussion and debate!

PEACE! <3

T PAIN SHOW REVIEW (T PAINFUL)

whaaasssup people. Right...so last night I saw T-Pain at the Indigo o2 and bwwwoooiiii, lets say if Id have had to pay for ticket (£30) i really would not be a happy bunny right now ¬_¬

Firstly, T Pain is someone who has been on my list of artists "too see" for a while now and so was excited when I found out earlier that day that I'd be going. The show opened with London's very own Play Ent who I have to say really did tear it up. The boys wouldnt have appeared as an obvious support act for Pain and subsequently really brought something fresh to the show. Putting down a medley of all their club anthems they left the crowd hyped up and ready to go. Then it all went down hill.....................
Pain's DJ then started an odd Hip-Hop set which was made up of tunes that were either B.A.I.T or tunes that were old but NOT old enough to be drawn for as justified as a classic - i.e Kanye's Stronger. He CLEARLY had not done his homework about what works for us here and what doesnt. Chris Breezy's DJ (Baby) is always on point with his UK shows, always puts down a banging (for a non-brit dj) UK set (eg/stush, dynamite, so solid, sway, whatever funky anthems have just blown up he'll drop dem too) ANYWAAAY - Pains DJ failed to do any of this and by the time the man himself actually got on stage I was no longer on a hype.
Given his recent drastic new "thing" being the whole circus act. I expected a mad backdrop, lots of stage scenery, wild costumes, clowns etc instead we got a messy stage with various water bottles and towels decorating the floor and DJ booth, 3 dancers (who were rarely all on stage at the same time) and a casually dressed T-Pain in his signature glasses who couldnt have looked less like a "ring leader" if he tried. At this point I realised I was not gunna be seeing the elaborately themed and construced stage show that I had came to, it was more like sitting in on a rehearsal =/ The one male dancer had some weird white facepaint on and the two girls were randomly wearing kaftan shirts with jeans, stripey hats and multi coloured reeboks. The routines were just repeated steps you would see in the clubs, but props to the male dancer though - without him there would have been nothing to look at whilst T-Pain was going AWOL whilst taking his T-breaks.

He opened the show with John Legends "Green Light"?!? which he borrowd and christened with a verse of his own. To be fair though the rest of the songs performed were all bangers and you tend to forget how many hits he's churned out since "Sprung" (even if its usually only the hooks that are his) lool sorry ill stop being so critical, but i just cant seem to stop!? OK - 2 things that surprised me the most -
1. he removed his glasses, and left them off for most of the show :O
2. he sung without his vocoda and he sounded decent. so after never really knowing whether or not T Pain can actually sing, this was a nice surprise =)
ok back to the bad bits....lol
This has to have been the ONLY show ive EVER seen where the artist took regular breaks during the performance. Most, go hard for at least 45 minutes before taking a time out. After the first song (one verse and a chorus of the John Legend track) if i recall correctly he had a little sit down near the DJ booth and drunk a bottle of water. This seemed to be an on going problem throughout the show and it got to the point where you EXPECTED him to do this in between each track. Whilst this was happeneing it was left to his DJ and dancer to keep us entertained with stupid banter and played out body poppin.
Around the 6th break T Pain had of walking around the back of the stage, drying his forehead with his towel and shakin out his dreads mentally preparing for the daunting task of delivering the PAYING fans another (PAID FOR) tune, he pulled up a seat at his keyboard and started to play chopsticks ¬_¬ this slowly developed into an unknown tune, to which he laced with annoying adlibs and bv's to a song no one knew. The audience seemed a little baffled as we waited in silence for something big to happen, we waited, we drank our JD and cokes, we waited a little longer, we updated our twitters on our berrys, we finally looked back up at the stage ad there was nothing else left to do othen than to check in on what was happening, and nada. He was still there. He eventually ended "the song" with another short rendition of chopsticks then got up and bowed, and had another bottle of water. He did another few "trademark T Pain dance moves" then began the next track. Two songs later he went back to the keyboard and performed "Cant Believe It" - which was really nice for the first 4 minutes. Then after the 7th minute of this "extended" version complete with dragged out repitions of the chorus and odd yelps we all started to wonder "was he just filling time?". Whilse this was happening, his dancer was left in the middle of the stage without a spotlight (not really looking like he was even supposed to be there) and had to freestyle to this slooooowed down version of the tune. He finally picked up the set and performed "Im So Hood" - my favourite of the evening and "Church" during which he took off his "ringleader-style" hat, got everyone on the stage to rub the top of it (?!?) and threw it out to the crowd. The person that caught it was probably the only one in there who got their value for money.
To end with, he came on to the stage and thanked us all for showing him more love than the people in his hometown, then just as he looked like he was gunna give us a final song..... he walked off stage. And that was that. During the short 40 minutes that he was on stage he drank so much water I'm surprised he didnt burst or turn into a camel. The DJ and male dancer then came out to select which groupies they wanted from the crowd which was rather embarrassing scene of young girls near the front of the stage looking proud that they had been selected to please the Pain lol. As we waited for our meet and greet session shortly after 80% of the girls got thrown out from backstage in front of us obviously not deemed "suitable" after closer inspection..
As he came out to us he wasnt saying much other than random outbursts of "sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!" lol :/
As bad as the show was, it cant be denied that he is tearing up the HipHop charts right now in the States and spreading worldwide, he writes , produces and yes i can confirm CAN sing so although i wont be going to another one of his shows again any time soon i will still be singing along to his 3 rings album (which is kinda deep, i cant lie)
photos uploaded soon, watch this space!
Here a lil suttin suttin -

shout to Redz, Reggie, Marvin & Policy who endured this all with me =)

peace!

TINCHY STRYDER + TAIO CRUZ = HIT SINGLE

The debate of whether or not Grime has a future is generating many heated discussions with sceptics doubting its longevity. It has almost become the "thing to do" for many of the leading artists to hook up with more commercial successes - and more times than not - this move has proven to be a good one in the process of sustaining mainstream interest for a genre that is considered so niche... Kano’s been doing the hip hop thing for a while now, Dizzie's been flowing recently with House & Hip Hop vets Armand Van Helden & Grandmaster Flash whilst also having collabed with Lily Allen and Arctic Monkey’s (to me these collabs felt more as though Dizzee was doing THEM a favour rather than the other way round) and "GoG" Wiley, is retiring (or is he?)- fresh, young and swaggered talents are needed to keep the movement strong (cue Tinchy Stryder's new one....)

The track is banging and so is the video, maybe lacking in a storyline but who the hell cares when you've got Taio doing what he dus best (lookin criss whilst beltin out his smooth, heart felt hooks), a quality produced video to match the tune's high standard and with hot girlz holding leashes with great danes big enough to be mistaken for donkies on the end of them - everyones a winner no?
Check the remix aswell featuring Chipmunik & Sway

Thursday 18 December 2008

Right lets get cracking, but before any heated, "meaningful" debates get started, i just wanted to say some nice things about a few artists that have been really repping recently...

  1. 1>>>THE SUGABABES - ok so everyones got their favourite cos they got that whole chocolate, vanilla or caramel vibe goin orrrn (personally Ive never been able to decide between Heidi or Amelle - (hold tite Scarrs, dont worry im not looking to snatch your wife - just maybe borrow at the weekends?) - anywaaaay - 2 weeks ago saw the final of this year's Hugo Boss Urban Rules talent comp of which XO Man was crowned 2008's champ so shout out to him and Fontz doing their thing reppin' for the new styyyle. So yeah with da man Manny Norte (Kiss 100's name you can trust) on the 1's and 2's and my boy Twin B hosting the night at Cargo in Shorditch the night was set to be a success. The Sugababes were last on the bill to perform and to be honest I had never seen them do a live set before and was pretty sceptical at how well they'd be able to deliver in an intimate setting like Cargo. HOWEVER (note the capitals used here) little did I know, the girlz were set to quite literally blow my socks off...yesss i was wearing 6 inch heels but just IMAGINE ok?? geez!) But wow, they aint 'alf got a set of pipes on em?! They had all the guys in the house drooling and all the ladies shakin' and singing along and I have to say I didnt actually realise how many of their songs i knew word for word =/ Amelle held it down between song changes bantering wiv the crowd and Keyshia an Heidi wow'd the crowd with the groups rendition of En Vogue's classic Dont Let Go. to quote the chica's "here come the girrrrrlss!"

http://www.hugofragrances.com/urbanrules - if your an up and coming urban artist from the UK hit this link up and apply for next year's one NOW!

2. >>> "its time to get funky funky!" - With the summer of Aiya Napa being still fresh in alot of heads and still close to many of our hearts its nice to see that despite this COLD, RIDICULOUS, SO UNSEXY winter weather the FUNKY is still going STRONG and seems very unlikely to be going away anytime soon! And to this, we owe our appreciation and thanks to a few key playerz that have been making it their mission to keep London and beyond "so damn bubbly"...I am of course talking about Crazy Cousins, MC Versatile, Donaeo and Hitty along side KIG Family. Big up ColdSteps aswell holdin down the M.I.C all summer... this one really has got the clubs goin nuts right now - if you dont know the dance by now, get off my blog! Lol - if the man dem are keepin it sho and the ladies are taking it low then the rest is IRRELEVANT!!
